Paul B. Kiewit Obituary (1923

The Rev. Dr. Paul B. Kiewit passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022, at the age of 99. Born in Chicago on April 25, 1923, he was the only child of Rev. Carl and Edna Kiewit. He graduated from Heidelberg University, where he met his wife Dorothy. They were married upon his graduation from Eden Theological Seminary on November 9, 1946. He began his ministry in the United Church of Christ on the staff of St. John's Church, Columbus, and then served other Ohio congregations in Canal Winchester, Massillon, Akron, and Canton, retiring as Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ after a 16 year tenure. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy. He is survived by sons David (Suzanne) Kiewit and John (Jan) Kiewit, and daughter Ann (William) Bonar; six grandchildren and their spouses; and twelve great grandchildren. He was husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to a loving family. In 1963 the mother of a developmentally disabled son challenged him to begin a church-related care-giving ministry in Ohio for adults like her son. With her gift of “five dollars to get it started” laid on his desk, he founded the Hope Homes Foundation, providing residential facilities for adults with developmental disabilities in more than two dozen homes in Ohio. After he and Dorothy traveled to India, he began raising capital funds for both the rebuilding of a portion of the Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore, South India, and also for the development of the Family Village Farm and Orphanage near Vellore. The CMC Hospital is today regarded as one of India's finest. Now in full operation, the Family Village Farm is home for 180 children and destitute adults, fulfilling the dream of Dr. Pauline King, a member of his Akron congregation and a United Church of Christ career missionary to India. Paul had a significant pastoral ministry. He was a member and officer of the founding board of Planned Parenthood in Akron and a trustee of Heidelberg University. He was a member of the United Church Homes Board, serving as chair for three years. Active in the UCC's Living Water Association, he served as Secretary and Moderator; and within the Heartland Conference of the UCC he was on the Board of Trustees and headed its Finance and Investment committees. Eden Seminary acknowledged his significant ministry and mission interests both at home and abroad with the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1972. The Council for Health and Human Services Ministry of the United Church of Christ awarded him its “Hall Of Fame” award in 1978, and his Alma Mater, Heidelberg University, presented him its “Alumni Citation Award” in 1994, the 50th anniversary of his graduation. United Church Homes presented him with its first "Legacy Leadership Award" in 2018. He was Pastor Emeritus of both Trinity Church in Canton and David's United Church of Christ in Canal Winchester, and was President Emeritus of Hope Homes Foundation. A service of remembrance and celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, September 24th at 11:00 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 3909 Blackburn Road NW, Canton, Ohio. A time of sharing among family and friends will take place at the Church that day from 9:30 until the service hour. Clergy are invited to bring a red stole.
